Nobel War Prize 2004

When I first heard through It's Craptastic's post that Bush, Blair and the Pope were being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, I admit I was a little skeptical. Ok, make that "wow, I wonder where's the punchline."

And yet it's true:
"OSLO, Norway (AP) — The Nobel Peace Prize awards committee reported a record 173 nominations for 2004, with known candidates including President Bush, jailed Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu and the pope...those nominating candidates often announce their choices, this year including Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair for protecting world peace.."

Did I miss something here?

Why not take this up a notch and call it the Nobel War prize, as the recent Noble war was what brought about this world peace. What other word can convey the praiseworthy sacrifice that Bush and sidekick Blair underwent to free millions, all through their compassion and desire to free the world from the Axis of Evil?

Is it possible to be the only sane one left standing in a world of lunacy? Isn't that even part of an old joke?

Because I Have Nothing Else Better to Do

Freep a Texas poll about Dubya's tacky use of 9/11, YET AGAIN, for political gains.

I guess it still hasn't registered to most folks that he invokes the name of 9/11 over and over and over and over again. Not to mention they plan on having their convention in NY, right around the corner from where the towers were....right about the same time of the 9/11 anniversary. Sure. It's a coincidence.

He's certainly not using 9/11 in an inappropriate way. They would never exploit a tragedy or it's victims for their own gains...

Freep it.

George Bush's Decisive Action in the War Against Terror

Memories can be tricky things. September 11, 2001 was a long time ago now, and the memory sometimes fails when recalling such a traumatic event. The Bush campaign plans to remind us about that difficult time and its impact on our country, and that's a good thing. We must never forget.

We must remember how the welfare of the public was always foremost in the President's mind, especially the health and safety of those who survived the horrible tragedy. We must remember how the President immediately demanded a thorough, in-depth investigation to determine how our intelligence agencies failed to prevent the attacks, and how he fulfilled his pledge to be 'a uniter, not a divider' by working actively with Democrats to create the new Department of Homeland Security and insure that such devastating attacks could never happen again. . . .

Annoy The Bush Campaign!

Go tell the Bush campaign why you're voting for Bush in November.

Here's my reason:

"I support George W Bush because I like watchin' the wars on the TV. Them bombs sure is cool. Bush kicks ass and I don't care whose ass is gettin kicked so long as the boot says "America" and the kickin is damn hard."

If you can't think of some reasons, feel free to use some the others I've come up with:

"I'm supportin George W Bush cuz I hate them homy-sexuals, and want to make sure they don't get no happiness that I got."

"I'm supportin' George W Bush cuz I don't deserve my job anyway."

"I'm sportin' George W Bush cuz he was a real war hero, not some pot smokin' draft dodger like John Kerry."

"I'm supportin' George W Bush cuz my parents was Republican and even though blacks is fine with me I don't trust'em all that much just yet."

"I'm sportin' George W Bush cuz I respond to fear like an abused dog."

If they offer to mail you stuff, say yes, because it'll waste their money. I know I am totally annoying for doing this, but it's fun. Feel free to post some suggestions in the comments.

-And Then...

He Sees Red, People

Yesterday I had a comment from Charles2 of The Fulcrum, that sent me on a mission to find the skinny on Grover "I see red states" Norquist. I didn't get as far as I would like, but I did make a start in, "Grover Norquist Googling".

His is a name I've heard on several occasions, but never thought too much about. That has changed. Why? Because someone who influences the Right and has such strong ties to the Karl Rove and the White House needs some close looking at. Also because he says things like;

"We play for keeps; they play for lunch."

and...

from this piece, 'Standard-bearer rallies conservatives'

[...]High on his "to-do" list is leading an effort to honor Reagan that includes urging every county in the country to name a building or a road for the former president, even as he lines up backing for replacing Alexander Hamilton's likeness with a picture of Reagan on the $10 bill.

Norquist's other outline for the future, which he has carefully written down and even charted on a timeline, includes a plan to reduce the size of government by half in relation to the national economy in the next 25 years. His aim is to do that by cutting taxes, privatizing Social Security and other government pension programs, selling off public lands, privatizing the postal service and giving universal vouchers for schools.

..."I'm not in favor of abolishing the government," he insists. But he often repeats the line, "I just want to shrink it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub."

The goal is an anathema to his critics, who charge that he merely wants to put more power and money in the hands of the corporations.

Norquist calls his vision "ambitious and reasonable," as he wrote in a column for the conservative Heritage Foundation in 2000.

If the plan could be achieved, what does he propose? "I have a recommendation: to cut government in half again by 2050."

Please do stop by and read the rest of what I found. Many of you may already be aware of most of it Either way, please deposit any comments or thoughts you might have and perhaps you might be inspired to look into this and write something up on it from your own unique perspective?

Nuremberg, Oklahoma

Via TPM comes this little gem of campaign rhetoric:
Republican Congressman Tom Cole claims a vote against the re-election of President Bush is like supporting Adolph [sic] Hitler during World War Two. It's what he said recently before a meeting of Canadian County Republicans.

U-S Representative Tom Cole might have stirred up Democrats by saying a vote against the re-election of President Bush is like supporting Adolph Hitler during World War Two. Or supporting Osama bin Laden now. "If George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election," Cole is quoted in this week's edition of the Yukon Review which covered the recent meeting of the Canadinan County Republicans where Cole was a speaker. The newspaper says Cole claims if Bush loses his re-election bid, the enemies of the U-S will interpret it as a victory for bin Laden. No comment so far from Oklahoma Democratic party leaders to see if they think Cole is comparing John Kerry to Adolph Hitler or Osama bin Laden. In the Yukon Review article, Cole is quoted as asking what Hitler might have thought had Franklin Roosevelt not been re-elected in 1944. (JB)
If I'm not mistaken, this is the same twit who objected to NBC showing Schindler's List without any editing back in 1999, saying it was "obscene" and "indecent" to show naked bodies of dead concentration camp victims.

If this is the way Bush's surrogates are going to campaign for him, this could be one of the dirtiest campaigns in memory.

[Update: Faithful reader and fellow TLC blogger Alex of SoonerThought notes: "Actually you are thinking of former Congressman Tom Coburn--he was the 'movie critic.'" Thanks, Alex. But Cole is still a twit.]

Give! Now! Go Go Go!

So Edwards is dropping out, meaning we know who the nominee is. Which means, believe it or not, the election has just started. Which makes this very important:

1. Take your tax cut, look at it, and repeat after me: "This is how much I am getting paid to have George Bush as my president."

2. Realize that, had Al Gore been president, you may in fact not have that tax cut. Then ask yourself if you would trade that in for having Al Gore as your President for the past four years. The answer, of course, is yes.

3. Donate some or All of Bush's Tax Cut to Cut Bush. You'd be surprised how little you need to give in order to be cool with the cool kids. These people love small donations, because they can use them to tout how the underprivileged are funding their revolution. So here:

Pledge time or money or both to Moveon.org, which will air ads attacking Bush in ways the candidates can't. You may have already seen the ad with children working on assembly lines and as janitors and the like, that ends with "Who will pay for Bush's deficits? Our Kids". That sort of thing. It's a media assault, which is useful, because Bush has got something like 3.6 million going into ads next week alone.

Then there's the chance to donate some money to Democratic Action (Congress) and/or the Democratic Senate Funds, both of which will go towards electing a Democratic Majority in the house and senate. These guys look at candidates who are struggling in their districts and give them a cash infusion to boost their chances. If Bush wins, somehow, next election, then having a Democrat-controlled House or Senate is still vital, because, if anything else, it means we can impeach the President. (We can't as it stands without a Majority.)

Then, of course, there is giving to the Democratic Party in General. Which does a few things. One, it helps with ad buys for the Presidential Nominee as well as the congress and senate. Two, it helps the Democrats establish an infrastructure, helps them better prepare the talking heads going on the news shows, helps them with polling and get out the vote drives.

You can also donate directly to John Kerry, who, let's face it, is going to be the Democratic Nominee. He's also pretty much broke already. Bush has got $127 Million. So, you know, we're the guys Kerry gets money from. It doesn't grow on trees or spontaneously emerge from the odor of corruption in corporate boardrooms the way it does for Bush.

If you're interested in donating to smaller races, you can do that too. Act Blue has a great list of close but winnable races in play this election year, with links to each candidate. So, even if you're in Georgia and you like a guy in Nevada, you can donate to him. "Adopt a Democrat" from out of state, which is fun. It's like having a pen pal. This one takes a bit of work on your part, but it might be the most important thing the internet can do for Democrats this year.

So that's that, folks.

Yours Truly, And Then...
